These fats are processed by the liver where they are used as a quick source of energy or turned into ketones. Coconut oil also has beneficial uses besides consuming it. Applying it to the skin can help reduce the symptoms of eczema, and can work as a sunscreen, blocking about 20% of the sun’s UV rays. Using it as a mouthwash, called oil pulling, can kill some of the harmful bacteria in the mouth while also improving dental health and reducing bad breath.
